A box turtle lives in my back pasture/vineyard. Will my riding mower crush or hurt it if I run over accidentally?

Is there a Box Turtle Connection packet for volunteers? I pick up turtles on roads and would like to tag them. Sea Turtle group does this on the coast with a tape measure, marker for shell and paperwork Thanks Heather Main

01:10:18
So fun!

01:11:32
Best to use your phone to take multiple photos from different angles for now

01:12:53
Do patterns on the shells change as the turtles grow

01:20:09
Sorry I have to leave early for medical appoint.

01:21:20
Resilient

01:22:56
There are a lot of chemtrails I see in the NC sky. How can that be impacting the turtles?

01:24:01
Do those transmitters interfere with their sexual behavior--males can mount females with no problem?

01:24:21
I've found a lot of box turtles on railroad tracks (up to 10 in 30 minutes) what is it about that harsh habitat appeals to them or are they just stuck?

01:28:35
I had a female lay a clutch of eggs in my yard. When we saw her we left her be so as not to stress her. Later I put a little flag nearby so we would know to be careful of the area. I can't tell that they ever hatched though. Is that common?

01:29:43
Do we need to do a fundraiser for FIT?

01:32:09
You'll only see a turtle crossing the road ...never seen one going down the road !

01:32:26
thank you, great information.

01:32:34
If there is an area about to be developed re: Chatham Park, can we go there before development and rescue them?

01:33:27
Missed Sara's contact info.

01:33:57
Erosion fences need to be removed….I see them everywhere and no one removes them so can be a barrier to turtle movement.

01:34:49
Is the iNaturalist box turtle data being harvested by your study, or is it not detailed enough to be useful. I’ve been photographing top and underside when I report them, but I’m wondering if that is enough to be helpful.

01:37:26
Would you add links in chat to inaturalist & tracker apps, Sara's email so it's easier to select? Thanks.

01:37:28
Because you mentioned they digest an pollinate mayapples, are mayapples a good indication box turtles live in the woodland?Debbie: Do nurseries sell mayflowers?

01:37:32
Erosion fences need to be installed and kept in place where there is new construction to reduce (and, we hope, prevent) sedimentation in our surface waters. There are *far* worse barriers to box turtle movement.

01:38:59
What time of year do they lay eggs?

01:39:21
Thx for the answer to my question. The photos made the transmitters look so big--they seemed invasive to the little critters (I worry a lot about turtles).

01:40:12
what about Turtle egg laying in our driveway?? This happens a lot to us.

01:40:39
Gravel drive...

01:40:58
How do we get the gps location?

01:41:09
There is a bill in NC house 496 that allows developers to take all trees down and there is no tree protection. Can you work on getting tree zone protection for all new developments and maybe work to not pass bill 496? We need groups to make tree protection in all developments in order to protect habitats and for shade and carbon sequestration and . to reduce global warming

01:41:38
Do the parents' scute patterns transfer to the babies? Could we tell who the parents are of a turtle?

01:41:42
great presentation

01:41:43
Awesome Sara!

01:51:31
Snappers have a very long, supple neck!

01:54:34
Thank you, I have to go to an appointment. Great presentations.

01:55:53
A year or two ago I found a dinner plate size snapping turtle inside my fenced (goat fence) pasture. Not sure how it got inside the fence. Was able to get it out safely and it ran away quickly.

02:00:42
what is the courtship ritual of turtles?

02:01:19
We live on a pine tree forest (100+ acres). We have a small (~1/4 acre) pond in the back yard. The pond is stocked with fish. This year we counted over 60 turtles. I think they are snappers, yellow bellied and red-eared. My husband read that the pond is overpopulated w turtles so he built a turtle trap and we caught several and moved them to a creek about 1 mile away. We choose this because it is downstream from us in the hopes that they would not come back. Did we do something wrong? What should we have done?

02:07:13
Oh wow! That's so good to know. I left it alone and hoped for the best!

02:07:48
How do hatchlings survive if they stay in the nest through the winter? What do they eat?

02:11:14
Can you recommend a reference book for identification?

02:11:50
Two river cooters, a painted turtle, and a snapping turtle all emerged from an adjacent wetland last June and laid eggs in my yard. I marked the nests, but have not seen any signs of disturbance since. May I assume any turtles within are long gone and/or eaten?

02:12:19
WE recently bought a property with a pond and have at least one monster Snapper! We also have two nesting ducks. Can they coexist, or will the snapper take the baby ducks? We'd love to have them all get along!

02:12:27
Thanks for the answer to our driveway nests!

02:12:54
Great and interesting presentations.

02:13:27
Why do box turtles come out after a rain to travel?

02:15:21
He read that the overpopulation in the pond was crowding out the fish? Especially if snappers were in the pond.

02:16:15
Can you talk a bit more about Delayed implantation?

02:16:54
Thanks for answering my question. Fascinating information!

02:23:34
Thanks!

02:29:11
any idea how old Crutchie is?

02:29:59
Debbie, are the rehabbed turtles always released back in their original territory? If that isn't known, what is done with the turtle?

02:31:37
Snapping turtles are so dense, they seem very heavy for their size.

02:34:05
So if we find an injured turtle, we put them in a box?

02:38:39
Love Winston! <3

02:40:01
We really enjoyed following your care & rehab of Winstonđź’•

02:44:30
Do you get a chance to visit Winston in his new habitat? Do you think he would remember/recognize you?

02:45:38
Without a shovel, I had a snapper bite a stick and pulled it gently off the road. Good practice?

02:46:18
I've used my car's floor mats to move a snapper off the road.

02:47:32
Happy Earth Day!

02:51:45
thank you all so much. hugely informative!

02:52:09
Use google maps to place a pin

02:52:09
I drop a pin in my Google Maps app

02:52:17
I’m not real mobile anymore but I do have some wooded property with intermittent stream, adjacent to larger tracts of woodland. Do you need area like this for habitat for a study area?

02:52:42
once I saw a box turtle biting another turtle’s shell in the fall. the other turtle was closed tightly and stayed that way….no consent there

02:52:45
Open compass, save a screenshot

02:53:04
if you take a photo and locate is on the photo will have the GPS corrdinates

02:53:05
Debbie's point about parking so the next car doesn't hit the turtle is so key.

02:54:00
Does the Box Turtle Connection have a Chatham site?

02:55:17
What's required to be a site?

02:55:54
For those interested in The Box Turtle Connection, you can also check out the website: https://boxturtle.uncg.edu/

02:56:01
please note there are some things that need to be updated. :)

02:58:14
I suspect if it's small you could perhaps put it on your floorboard?

02:58:34
If it's really teeny, your cupholder :)
